Weight loss with green tea extract has become popular throughout the years, surpassing the popularity of the controversial weight loss pill; Ephedrine. There have been numerous studies published on the dosage of green tea extract needed to successfully shed pounds and feel great. These studies provide great examples for green tea and weight loss, as well as shed some light into the prevalent question “does green tea help with weight loss?” The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that measured the ingestion of catechins and if they lead to a reduction in body fat in 2005. Thirty five healthy Japanese men that had comparable waist sizes and body miss indexes were put into two groups. One of the groups consumed green tea with 690 mg of green tree catechins, while the second group consumed only 22 mg of catechins. It was found that the men given 690 mg lost a much more significant amount of weight than the men in the second group. Moreover, the group of men that consumed more catechins showed improvements in their LDL blood cholesterol level.

A second study titled was on obese and overweight individuals taking in 635 mg of catechins and whether it had an effect on tea and weight loss, was published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2008. Overweight and obese individuals were put on diets containing the same amounts of calories and a supervised exercise program for three months. The groups were then split up into 625 mg of catechin intake, and no intake of the green tea antioxidant. Green tea weight loss effects were evident in the group given the catechins because they lost more abdominal as well as total body weight. As with other diet techniques, in combination with the control of calorie intake and moderate exercise, more abdominal fat and total weight loss in the body can be seen with green tea extract.
Green tea for weight loss can also be beneficial in supplement form. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that involved twelve healthy men who were split into groups with the first group taking a supplement containing 890 mg of catechin after thirty minutes of consistent cycling, and the second group taking a placebo. Men that were given the powerful green tree antioxidant portrayed a 17% increase in fat burning rates compared with the placebo group of men. Burning fat at a faster rate during exercise is just another beneficial factor of green tea and weight loss.
